Maukaonyx's "Life is GOOD!": Scythe

Aloha and Welcome to my small speck of cyberspace! Dec 8, 2010 is the birth date of my blog. Never had one before, but my son encouraged me to have one, and it seemed like a good way to at least keep a log of my RC airplane building and flying. With the initial design kicked off by my son, I'll carry on from here and have fun with it. Now that I have it, I will use it to also keep track of my oil painting efforts, and any other ideas, hobbies, travels, or whatever else that come up. LIFE IS GOOD!

Update on 02/25/2011. It's been a few months since I began this blog, and I am enjoying creating and having it! I like documenting the things I have done in my hobbies, and sharing with my small family. I think Jer and Tad actually view it fairly regularly, as a means to see what I've been up to lately. At worst, it serves as a reference for my own use.

Update on 12/22/2011. This blog stuff is habit forming. My blog is a year old now, and I make an entry about every other day or so as that seems to be the frequency of doing something in one of my hobbies. Like my hobbies, this blog is a lot of fun, and it has become in itself another hobby that I enjoy.

Years are flying by...update on 01/11/2013. Still enjoying maintaining this blog even though hardly anyone sees it. I don't advertise it anywhere or to anyone, and it is mainly just a way for me to keep my own notes and thoughts on my flying, painting, and cars. If a stranger happens upon it, I think it is by pressing NEXT at the top of the current blog they are visiting, lol. It's a great device for me.

August 2014: still here! Took up flying RC helicopters one year ago and got hooked. Had flown micro Helis up to then, but got serious with 450 size for a couple months, then bought the Goblin 500 and Gaui X5 . Also got my Boxster in April 2013. Most importantly, Ariel was born 12/02/12 followed by Skylar 07/20/13, and they are little beacons of joy in our lives. Life is indeed good!!!

March 2025: we’re up to five grandkids! Jack born 11/15/2016, Carter 01/14/2017, and Noah 04/22/2019. And Alex and Robin married on 09/25/2021!

Warbird saturday

Yesterday was warbird Saturday at our club field. Hardly anyone showed up, but it meant i got to fly my T-28 and P-47 as much as i wanted. Three flights on the former, and two on the latter made me happy. Both flew like usual and made it through another Zmemorial Day weekend.

As part of this years event, we also had a combat session with our Scythe wings. Mike, Dick, Chris and I were the only ones with our wings. We had about three sorties. Chris and i managed to hit each other over the tall grass of the North field. My plane spun down while Chris stayed up another 20 seconds or so. I thought that won the kill for Chris. Much fun had by all.

Fri-Sat replay

Flew Friday, using 10 packs for 4 flights on the G500, 2 on the X5, and 2 on the G630. Great weather, great visibility. Tried to mow but the left front tire was totally flat. Got the mower back into the shed with help from Don and Jerry...it would not start to get back up the ramp, but then did start in the shed afterwards.

Flew today, using 10 packs again for the same number of flights on each heli. Weather was not only as nice as yesterday, but today JB workers were not present to harvest sod. Very odd! Anyway, I got in a lot of inverted straight lines again, but dare not turn, lol. I did do a 180 pyro now and then while hovering inverted, then flip out to upright. Also tried getting inverted via forward flips and side flips, but those are shaky compared to entry from back flip which I have done many times now. '

Also flew the Scythe a couple flights with Mike and Brandon. Nobody came close to hitting, not that I could really see that well, but it is going to take a miracle to hit each other when the guys only want to buzz around up high at full throttle.

Before flying, I inflated the tire on the mower with my portable pump from the good old days. Still works! And the tire held its air...I will see if it still has air in it another day.

Fleet of Four

Flew this fleet today, running 16 batteries out, lol.

I ran 3 packs through the G500, 2 in the X5, 6 in the Star, and 5 in the new Scythe wing. It was maiden day for the Scythe, and it flew fine. Just needed a little up and left trim and it was good enough. I found that the plane would snap out of tight loops so between flights I toned down elevator throws to 90%. It can be decreased a little more but is very flyable as is. Seems sensitive in pitch so I wonder if mine is tail heavy. Also just seems touchy regarding neutral elevator. Might try a small piece of lead in the nose someplace.

Helis flew good with many inverted straights. My pullouts with the second half of the loop were not the best due to a different wind direction today, but that is good for practice. Just need to get rudder corrections in before pulling out so that the heli pulls into the dive true instead of slightly sideways.

Star flew like a star as always! I just had to rebind it to the transmitter at the field...luckily I had a bind plug there. I had mistakenly binded the Scythe on my DX6 while on the Star model. That obliviated connection to the Star, which I forgot about till it would not bind at the field, lol. Dumb dumb me.
